Romantic and mysterious, populated with flowers, animals, and imaginary creatures under a starry sky, surrealism occupies an important place in the work of Kasumi Morimura, an artist of Japanese origin. Born in Japan and having lived in Europe for half of her life, she creates works inspired by René Magritte, Paul Delvaux, and traditional Japanese painting. She holds particular admiration for the 18th-century Japanese painter Maruyama ôkyo, known for his meticulous drawings and for being the first to depict a ghost without feet, making him her main source of inspiration.
After studying art history and textile arts, and with experience in contemporary dance and fashion, she is interested in unconventional beauty, symbolism, parallel, spiritual, and imaginary worlds, as well as the universe of theater and childlike dreams. Fairy tales, children's literature, and a mysterious book, the "Tibetan Book of the Dead", have always been her sources of inspiration. Lewis Carroll is another great influence, and she is fascinated by the clothing and interior decoration of the Victorian era in England. She holds a bachelor's degree from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and a Master's in Textile Arts from Goldsmiths College, University of London.
Each image that Kasumi creates begins with sketches of various motifs, such as flowers, animals, and people; sometimes these sketches are of real objects, and other times they are inspired by photos. The sketches are then developed into acrylic paintings, watercolours, or pencil drawings enhanced with Indian ink.
